The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

THE GOOD

Mrs. Jane Kinney named the Top Notch Teacher for May by WISC TV
Mrs. Kinney is a 1st grade teacher at C.H. Bird Elementary. Mrs. Kinney was nominated for the award by the staff of C.H. Bird School. She has been teaching in the Sun Prairie Area School District since 1989 -- almost completing her 21st year of teaching children of our community! "Topnotch Teachers" is WISC-TV's way of highlighting and celebrating the efforts of area teachers.

THE BAD

No All-State Scholarship winners in Sun Prairie
The May 2 All-State Scholars Honors Banquet at the Monona Terrace Community and Convention Center in Madison brought together 120 graduation senior students from across the state for recognition of their academic achievements.
"Wisconsin was one of the first states in the nation to develop a program to honor graduating seniors for their academic accomplishments," said State Superintendent Tony Evers. "Those who study hard and take advantage of the education offered in our state’s schools have surely earned this recognition."

Students were chosen as All-State Scholars by a committee of school administrators, based on students’ overall grade-point average and scores for the ACT or SAT college admission tests. Schools with 400 or fewer students could nominate one graduating senior to the program. Schools with enrollments between 401 and 999 students could nominate two students, and schools with 1,000 or more students could nominate three graduating seniors.

Founded in 1986, the All-State Scholars program includes the Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship, which supports students’ future academic studies. Pending full funding at the federal level, Byrd scholarships may provide $1,500 per year, for up to four years. Students may use the scholarship at any postsecondary educational institution in the United States.

Unfortunately, Sun Prairie has no scholarship winners. Congratulations go out to nominees Laura Linde and Kevin Vollmer.
SP-EYE wonders...if we could nominate 3 students...how come we only nominated 2?

If Sun Prairie is reviewed against both Dane County school districts, and similar-sized school districts, it's clear that we are not producing scholars at the rate and frequency of our peers. That's a shame. Oh well...we're good at athletics...maybe we should sink money into Ashley Field renovations.

Sun Prairie Strikes out on National Merit Scholars
Twenty-seven area high school seniors are among 2,500 nationwide to win the prestigious $2,500 National Merit Scholarship. Nearly one-third of the 54 scholarships awarded to Wisconsin students went to seniors at Madison public high schools.

THE UGLY
Shenanigans continue to run rampant within district administration and the school board.
